Indeed, I have just a little bit to talk about here. First of all, if you've had trouble finding me on YouTube it's due to a username change on that end: I am now MaraSargon on there.
Not much has happened on the musical front. As usual I upload to YouTube first and only upload here when I'm confident the song is good enough. That being said, I did finally fix the timing on "A World Without Danger" and brought in the background guitar.
Absolutely no progress on the writing front at the moment: work and school suck up too much time to just sit down and do it.
That's all for today.
...here's a new update.
Not a whole terrible lot to report this time. A couple updated songs, a couple brand new ones, same old, same old. I finally got a request for some of my songs to be used in a video game a few days ago, so that was nice. Other than that I've mostly been learning how to play Arsenal of Democracy. That game is beast.
I tried learning Chinese this quarter. After all I had taken Japanese and didn't think it was that hard, so Chinese couldn't be much harder, right? Wrong... in fact by the end of it I kinda wished this picture was true.
I gave my second song a complete overhaul today. It has my favorite melody out of all of them, and it was really jarring to be listening to my more recent songs and then have that old one pop up. Again it's my favorite melody, but compared to the new ones it was really lacking. So I went in and gave it a grade-A cleanup. :)
Now I just have to decide if I want to delete the other two versions...
And while we're on the subject, I would like to make a small request that I think should just be common courtesy: DON'T RE-UPLOAD MY STUFF TO YOUTUBE! I have a YouTube channel, and in fact I upload my music there first; Newgrounds is second on the list. If you want to use my music in a video then that's fine, but please don't just upload the song: It steals views and ratings that could be going to me, the actual author, instead. It's incredibly irritating and disrespectful to me, and even illegal if you forget to credit me. So please let me advertise my own work and find something else to upload; your own original material, perhaps. :)
A lot of my songs sound like crap on speakers. I make them with headphones in mind because... well, they're all I use normally. And because I think headphones are the proper way to hear electronic instruments. :D
So yeah, I'd suggest listening to my songs with headphones if you don't already.
I updated nearly all my songs today with new versions fixing certain flaws, or just generally making the song sound better. I also went ahead and deleted all the duplicate songs I uploaded back before I understood how to update existing ones.
I've pretty much explored the extent of FL Studio's capabilities at this point. What's left now is to decide how to come up with some new song ideas.
Well I finally figured out a feature in FL Studio that I've been confused about for the longest time now. You see, what I've been doing all this time is creating a pattern and then painting it onto the pattern timeline. The problem is that the more patterns you make, the more cluttered that timeline gets. Because of this I've always been a bit squeamish about creating more than about 15 patterns in one song, and I would often have several instruments playing in the same pattern just to cut down on space.
Now, though, I've figured out what the other song line is for, and I've found that the best way to use it is to assign one instrument to each line. Since multiple patterns can be on the same line -the same cells even- I can give each instrument its own pattern, and now I can be just a bit more creative with my song arrangements without making a horrible mess of things in the process.
Needless to say, this makes me very happy. :D
Well I'm still trying to figure out all of how FL Studio works. I've finally figured out all the sound balance and effects options I can use., which I demonstrated in the song "Wrath of Mara". In the same song I finally started upping the complexity as well. I'm thinking the next step is to go and find some instrument packs that I can use to make some better sounding songs. (The FL Slayer guitar I've had to use so far is atrocious, even for a synth guitar...) I'm thinking I might also want to explore the importing options in case I ever want to try making some proper remixes.
